Welcome to Laura, Hannah & Caroline – volunteers at the Gaia Reserve!

Asomacao would like to introduce you to three new volunteers that joined the reserve at Gaia Hotel on Monday 8th July. Laura, Hannah and Caroline are all conservation Interns who have been volunteering with company Global Vision International (GVI) at Tortuguero National Park for the last three months.

They are now volunteering with the Macaws at Gaia for 11 weeks and will be helping Ana Maria feed the Macaws and clean the cages, twice a day, Monday to Friday.

They also conduct biodiversity surveys on seven different trails that they have established in Quepos and Manuel Antonio. They alternate the trails and complete a morning survey at around 6am, Monday to Friday, recording all the species and Macaws they observe. Please view the ‘Top sightings on surveys!’ blog post to find out what they have seen. It is hard work, but they are really enjoying it!

One project they are working on is creating new education pack for schools. Educating the youth in conservation is extremely important. They are the future of conservation so getting them interested in conservation when they are young is key. Right now, we are currently working on a school curriculum that can be passed out to teachers in Quepos and in surrounding towns. This curriculum will include information on animals here in Costa Rica including the Scarlet Macaws, the different habitats in Costa Rica, evolution, the ecosystem, the different between wild animals and domestic animals and much more! The education packs will include activities for the children to do inside and outside of the classroom.

If you would like to volunteer, please go this page.
